THE CARLOS SLIM FOUNDATION OF MEXICO AWARDS AN ARGENTINE ORGANIZATION AS THE “EXCEPTIONAL INSTITUTION” IN PUBLIC HEALTH OF THE YEAR 2023 IN ALL OF LATIN AMERICA
The award, which distinguishes organizations “that contribute with innovative and efficient alternatives in public health for the population of the region,” will be presented to the IECS, an independent academic institution that has been dedicated to health research for two decades.
El Health Award for Exceptional Institution of the Carlos Slim Foundation of Mexico, which aims to recognize successful programs in terms of improvement of the health of the Latin American population, was awarded this year to Institute of Clinical and Health Effectiveness (IECS), an independent academic institution affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) that is home to a CONICET executing unit, a WHO Collaborating Center and a Cochrane Center.
According to the Foundation, the award is granted to “organizations that contribute with innovative and efficient alternatives in public health for the population of the region, and that are distinguished by their sensitivity to identify the most relevant care needs, their vision of who should receive care, the quality with which it is provided and their resolution capacity.”
“It is always a pride receive recognition of this magnitude. At IECS we are not only dedicated to making research very high level, but also to training. We promote that the application of evidence that we generate in public policies allow you to achieve a more equitable and effective health and transform the reality of the people and in Argentina, in Latin America and in the world,” said Dr. Andrés Pichon-Riviere, director general of the IECS, principal investigator of CONICET, master's degree in Clinical Epidemiology from Harvard University and doctor in Public Health.
The Carlos Slim Prize in Health has been awarded to other prestigious institutions over the last decade, including the Drugs Initiative for Neglected Diseases Latin America (DNDi Latin America), based in Brazil; the Foundation Center for Infectious Studies (FUNCEI), from Argentina; the Central American Network of People with HIV (REDCA+) of El Salvador; the League against Cancer of Peru; and the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition, in Mexico.
According to considerations disseminated by the Carlos Slim Foundation itself, the IECS develops, among other projects, clinical trials, epidemiological surveillance, qualitative research and evaluation of the effectiveness of health interventions in topics such as health technology, maternal and child health, chronic diseases, cancer and public health policies.
IECS research projects involve thousands of people in Latin America and other regions. In their 20 years of experience, the organization has developed more than 700 projects in 40 countries. As some examples of its research, the IECS has generated studies on maternal and perinatal health that involve more than 250.000 women who gave birth in 40 hospitals in 16 countries and a study on cardiovascular health status that follows 7.500 adults. in three countries of the Southern Cone. Furthermore, it has received more than 9 thousand students from 20 countries in its more than 50 training programs.
The award ceremony, consisting of a statuette and a financial award of $100.000 that will be allocated to research projects, will take place in Mexico City this Tuesday (June 6).
