Buenos Aires, May 30, 2018 – Tomorrow the IECS will receive an award from the World Health Organization (WHO) for World No Tobacco Day, which is commemorated every May 31. The award is a recognition for the contribution that the IECS made “to the development of research on the disease burden of smoking in Latin America and on the cost that this epidemic causes in the health systems of the region.”
The WHO considered that our institution made “outstanding contributions in the fight against tobacco,” as it generated scientific evidence that allowed us to define more effective and efficient measures in the fight against smoking. This evidence was widely cited in the tobacco control laws and regulations recently adopted in different Latin American countries.
It should be noted that the IECS is the only Argentine entity that will receive this prestigious award in 2018. The other 5 distinguished entities and personalities are from Chile, Guyana, the United States and Uruguay.
The research awarded by the WHO is freely accessible and can be viewed here. It was financed by the International Development Research Center (IDRC) of Canada.
