Objective
Identify and describe the main cancer research needs in six South American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, as well as establish priorities to strengthen research capacities.
Summary
The study will be developed jointly by the South American Center of Excellence in Cardiovascular Health (CESCAS), of Argentina, and CRONICAS Center of Excellence in Chronic Diseases, of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, of Peru, in association with the Dana Cancer Institute -Farber (DF/HCC), main teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. As part of the project to create the South American Center for Research in Non-Communicable Diseases, an assessment of cancer research needs will be developed in six South American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. The study will focus on breast, prostate, colorectal, cervical, stomach, lung and bile duct cancer. To achieve its objectives, this needs assessment has been designed as a five-stage study, which includes: 1) Bibliometric review of scientific production on cancer; 2) Identification and characterization of researchers, institutions and databases using public information sources; 3) Semi-structured interviews with key informants; 4) Surveys of researchers; and finally 5) A prioritization exercise with experts using the modified DELPHI method. It is expected to achieve a better understanding of the situation of cancer research in South America, which will allow establishing consensus on priorities to strengthen research in the region.
